See Full Article HERE Announcement from the Illuminating Engineering Society of New York City: Zachary Pearson, a candidate in the Master of Science in Lighting program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), is the winner of the third annual IESNYC Scholarship. This merit-based scholarship comes with a monetary value of $25,000 to support a full-time, graduate degree candidate in architectural lighting enrolled in an accredited college or university located in New York State. "I am profoundly honored to be the recipient of this year's IESNYC Scholarship, and I am grateful to have been recognized for my work and dedication in a field that I am passionate about," says Pearson. "I am humbled to receive this generous award from such a prestigious organization." Rensselaer School of Architecture’s Zachary Pearson, along with Seizen Uehara, Belèn Pizarro, and Àngela Ferrero, entered ISARCH’s International Competition for architecture students. This past week, it was announced that they received Special Honorable Mention as one of the top 10 projects overall. This was determined by both a select judging panel and public voting. The jury was composed of Tomislav Dushanov, Associate HERZOG & DE MEURON, Alexandros Kallegias, Senior Architect at Zaha Hadid Architects, Filipe Magalhães, Ana Luisa Soares and Ahmed Belkhodja, Ben van Berkel, Founder/Principal Architect UNStudio, Kenzo Tange Chair at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Joshua Prince-Ramus, Founder/Principal /President at REX, and FLORES & PRATS. Assistant Professor Alexandra Rempel, graduate students Mae-Ling Lokko, Naomi Keena, Kenton Phillips, and Mohamed Aly Etman, and undergraduate student Zachary Pearson from the Rensselaer School of Architecture presented papers at the Passive and Low Energy Architecture (PLEA) Conference in Los Angeles, California. PLEA is a commitment to the development, documentation, and diffusion of the principles of bioclimatic design and the application of natural and innovative techniques for sustainable architecture and urban design. The Lighting Research Center‘s collaborative installation project “Breathing Lights“ proposes to illuminate nearly 350 vacant homes in Albany, Schenectady, and Troy nightly over two months in fall 2016 to regenerate interest in once-vibrant neighborhoods that currently have high vacancy rates. It is one of four projects nationwide to receive a $1 million grant from the Bloomberg Public Art Challenge. Researchers and students at RPI’s Lighting Research Center (LRC) assisted artist Adam Frelin, Assistant Professor of Art at SUNY Albany, and Barbara Nelson, an architect at RPI’s Campus Planning and Facilities Design Department, in the development of this installation. The project will culminate in a regional summit on vacant homes and neighborhood revitalization that will engage local residents, prospective buyers and investors, and policy makers. Frelin and Nelson sought to enliven 350 abandoned buildings in Albany, Troy, and Schenectady by making them “breathe” using interior lights of shifting, dynamic brightness.
